Location: Floreat, Perth, Western Australia, Australia
Type: Postdoctoral

Expires: January 24, 2012
Requisition number: WA02525
job description

Excellent development opportunity

Targeted career advancement plan

Showcase your quantitative informatics skills

The position:
CSIRO Ecosystem Sciences (CES) is offering an exciting opportunity for a Postdoctoral Fellow to undertake research in the area of Ecology and Phylogenetic Diversity of Insect Metacommunities. The Postdoc will join a multidisciplinary team of researchers investigating the ecological, evolutionary and biogeographic processes that regulate the structure of invertebrate metacommunities in the Kimberley wilderness region of northwestern Australia. The project aims to pioneer the rapid assessment and interpretation of large scale invertebrate biodiversity data generated by high throughput metagenomic sequencing technologies. This approach will provide a novel opportunity to examine metacommunity dynamics within a phylogenetic context.

You will have primary responsibility for the development of a novel set of analytic and bioinformatic tools for the ecological and evolutionary interpretation of sequence metadata, which will then be used to inform conservation planning and future environmental impact assessments. You will also participate in collecting invertebrate samples from remote rainforest habitats and, through collaboration between CSIRO Ecosystem Sciences and the University of Western Australia, will have opportunities to co-supervise post-graduate students.

Specifically you will:

undertake research to develop and utilise a novel set of analytic and bioinformatic tools;

participate in the identification of further opportunities arising from research and initiate new lines of research;

assist in the planning and preparation of research proposals and carry out investigations;

cooperate with others to build an effective research team;

present results in a meaningful format and write scientific papers for publication.

Location: Floreat (Perth) Western Australia
Salary: AUD75K – AUD82K plus up to 15.4% Superannuation (Pension Fund)
Tenure: 2 year term
Ref No.: WA02525

To be considered you will have a PhD, or will shortly satisfy requirements for a PhD, in a relevant field.

You will also have:

research experience in community or spatial ecology, phylogenetic diversity, or biodiversity informatics;

the ability to develop and pursue novel research approaches;

strong communication skills, including the ability to publish in scientific journals and present at conferences;

the ability to cooperate and collaborate with others to achieve objectives;

the ability to work independently under minimal supervision and meet performance deadlines.

Owing to terms of the fellowship, candidates must not have more than 4 years of relevant Postdoctoral experience.
