A Postdoctoral Fellow is required to characterise the single neuron activity of motor thalamus in normal and chronic unilateral Parkinson’s disease model rats, and investigate the effect of novel deep brain stimulation approaches in thalamus on motor cortex activity and behaviour.

Experiments involve stereotaxic surgery, induction and behavioural testing of chronic, neurotoxin-induced Parkinson’s disease rat models, electrical brain stimulation, construction and use of microwire electrodes, and extracellular single-unit recording in free-moving rat. Some experiments will require construction of combined optic fibre and microwire recording electrodes (optrodes) and optical stimulation in rats expressing channelrhodopsin in specific cell populations.

Ideal candidates will have experience in at least stereotaxic surgery, and single neuron electrophysiology. Expertise in rat models of Parkinson’s disease would also be an advantage.
