CELLULAR AND NETWORK MECHANISMS IN THE
NEUROENDOCRINE SYSTEM

Our laboratory is interested in determining the properties of neurons and networks in the hypothalamus that underlie control of hormone secretion in the pituitary. We have recently presented a novel model for the dopaminergic inhibition of prolactin release that allows lactation to take place only during nursing in women and in men not at all (Lyons et al., 2010; Neuron– see also comment by van den Pol, 2010; Neuron; 65:147-9, and Lyons D. et al., 2012; J. Neuroscience) We are now investigating several aspects of the network oscillations we have described in tuberoinfundibular dopamine neurons, including the conductances involved, the regulation by hormones and transmitters, and the functional relevance of such oscillations. This project is funded by a grant from the European Research Council.

Requirements:
The successful candidate should hold a PhD in neuroscience, proficiency in spoken and written English and 2+ years documented experience in whole cell patch clamp or intra-cellular recording – the project is heavily focused on slice electrophysiology and solid experience from these techniques is a substantial advantage. The position is available immediately.
